Isabel A.C. Ribeiro

My Story

Isabel Ribeiro is currently an Assistant Professor at the Pharmaceutical Sciences and Medicines Department of the Faculty of Pharmacy, University of Lisbon (FFUL) as well as Principal Investigator of the Group Pharmaceutical Bioengineering and Biotechnology & Bioproducts (PharmaBB) at the Research Institute for Medicines (imed). I. Ribeiro graduated in Pharmaceutical Sciences at the Faculty of Pharmacy, University of Lisbon, in 2000. After working at the Quality Control of Medicines Laboratory of INFARMED (National Authority of Medicines and Health Products) she initiated research studies at FFUL and became mother of two boys. She presented her PhD thesis “Sophorolipids: from biosynthesis to biological activity evaluation” under the subject of Pharmaceutical Biotechnology in 2012. After the PhD she started to establish herself as an independent researcher at imed and has received 2 financed approved projects as PI and 6 research prizes. She has supervised 1-Post-Doctoral fellow, MSc fellows, more than 31 MSc students and several ERAMUS/mobility students (e.g. UK, Switzerland, Germany, Spain, Italy). I. Ribeiro has published over 35 papers in international peer reviewed (ISI) journals, 3 book chapters and has presented 22 oral and more than 50 panel communications. She has also participated as member in EU COST Networks (COST Actions TD1305 and CA16217).

Research interests: • Biosynthesis of antimicrobial compounds (e.g. antimicrobial glycolipids) and their LC-MS characterization. • Functionalization of biomaterials surfaces with biological active molecules. • Characterization of innovative biomaterials with pharmaceutical/biomedical application. • Design of platforms to prevent medical devices (e.g. catheters, implants) related infections.
